Yao Girl Education in Malawi

Yao Girl Education in Malawi

Girl education among the Yao is viewed with very little interest. A girl’s role involves the kitchen and taking care of her husband and children, if married. At the age of 10-12 years old the girl is considered ready for such roles. The initiation ceremonies in the southern part of Malawi deprive many girls of the opportunity to continue with school. The ceremony that is believed to promote good values in the communities and ushers the girls into adulthood ends up promoting cycles of poverty. After the initiation cleansing which involves a hyena (a man in his thirties) sleeping with a teen girl in the name of protecting the village from misfortune, most girls end up with early pregnancies or HIV/AIDS and they drop out of school. Some of these life situations leave the girls traumatized. Our goal is to empower these girls with an education so that their welfare is improved and the cycles of poverty broken. A gift of $136 will keep a girl in school for the whole year. Our target is to help 15 girls complete their education by 2023. Our target goal of $2040 is for one year of education.
